Conversations with a reconstructed ancestor's perspective, clearly labelled as such

What is this about: When explicitly authorised, let descendants converse with a reconstruction of an ancestor's documented perspective — always separated into evidence, interpretation, and imagination.

Why do we need it: Family memory is only useful if it never confuses what was said with what is guessed.

Why is it still open: Deliberately parked as a future idea.

What would let us close this

  • - Remains a deliberately parked idea; it closes when its parent epic's prerequisites land, or when the idea is explicitly dropped.

Version impact (declared at submission — verified at merge)

  • major — breaking: changes a contract, schema, or interface others depend on
  • minor — new capability: something becomes possible that wasn't
  • patch — repair: same behaviour, done correctly
  • none — touches no released artifact (docs, memory, process notes)

Technical details (original description, preserved)

Original issue body

STATUS: FUTURE (low priority roadmap)

Design capture only — not an implementation ticket. Part of epic #175.

Design target

Allow descendants, when explicitly authorized, to interact conversationally with a reconstruction of an ancestor's documented perspective. The system must always separate:

Direct evidence

"Nick explicitly said..."

Supported reconstruction

"Based on repeated evidence, Nick would probably have..."

Weak inference

"There is limited evidence, but one plausible interpretation is..."

Unknown

"There is not enough evidence to know."

Hard requirements

  • No claim that the ancestor is literally present/conscious.
  • No silent fabrication of missing views.
  • No style imitation that obscures epistemic status.
  • Source/provenance must be inspectable; temporal context must matter.
  • Contradictory evidence must surface.
  • An ancestor's likely view must NOT automatically become the current owner's view.
  • Current Rune remains one continuing agent rather than pretending to become the ancestor.
  • Future evaluation must include deliberately unanswerable questions and reward calibrated refusal/uncertainty.

Dependencies

Issue C (temporal autobiographical model) plus provenance, retrieval, confidence/calibration, inheritance permissions (Issue E).

Non-goals

Not impersonation; not digital resurrection; not a chat persona; not silent inference-to-fact.

How Nick can verify this (eventually): an unauthorized/declined query refuses; every answer labels direct vs reconstructed vs unknown; unanswerable questions produce calibrated refusal rather than confident storytelling.

Status: FUTURE (low priority). Part of epic #175. Depends on: #177 Depends on: #179

Direct evidence / supported reconstruction / weak inference / unknown must remain visibly distinct in every answer.

Plain summary — why this closed

This idea now lives inside its parent epic #175 as a tracked checklist item — one open note per idea, less clutter on the board. Nothing was deleted: this issue's full detail is preserved below and in #175's absorbed-children section.

Technical details

  • STATE: HISTORICAL_EVIDENCE — absorbed into #175 on 2026-09-19
  • REVERSIBLE: re-mint as a standalone issue when the idea becomes live work
  • SUMMARY CARRIED: Conversations with a reconstructed ancestor's perspective, clearly labelled as such
