Nick 0a9b0648cd feat(scaffolding): live Need→Decision→Contract adoption path + contract-quality repair + layout obligation injection (SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-004)
- construction_decision.py: the adoption layer — Need intake (references
Task/Intent by pointer, never duplicates), requirement normalization
(gaps recorded, never invented), deterministic discovery+fit+resolution
across authorities with merge precedence (BUILD_NEW never a fallback
across merges; normalization gaps block it), toolchain decision (existing
toolchain wins), USER-LOCKED layout obligation inheritance, approval
gate (material changes require user; approved-bounded work never re-asks),
durable model-independent decision trace, contract generation populated
from the trace. Research routing is an HONEST SEAM: recorded route, not
  executed ADAPT call (§6).
- scaffold.py contract-quality repair (Tranche 3 defects): closure now
  distinguishes predicted_existing_affected / expected_new /
  correctly_predicted / predicted_but_unaffected / expected_new_observed /
  expected_new_missing / genuinely_unexpected_new; prediction cannot
  self-certify observation; legacy keys (missed/needless/observed)
preserved — old contracts readable without migration
- layout obligations: affected UI component/region/implementation pulls
its Layout Contract into generated obligations; USER-LOCKED obligations
state that changes require explicit user authorization; unrelated
  backend changes inherit none
- REAL LIVE PROOF (§24): the contract-quality Need ran through the new
path — discovered module:scaffold (PARTIAL fit on closure-quality
contract), ADAPT_EXISTING verdict, python KEEP_EXISTING, approval
  covered by SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-004, generated LIVE-CONTRACT-QUALITY-001,
implemented, verified (10 contract-quality tests), closed with repaired
semantics — which correctly flagged parent-tranche surfaces as outside
this bounded contract's scope (RED honored, attribution recorded)
- baseline correction recorded: Tranche 3 pre-build = 1386 tests (report
wording corrected in contract-quality notes, provenance kept)
- version-display lock status: still scaffold-provenance, USER-LOCKED
upgrade PENDING USER CONFIRMATION (not fabricated)

Tests: 37 new (decision path 15, contract quality 10, layout obligations
10, plus repaired-closure compat); suite 1476 green; henxels rc=0;
pyright 0 errors on new/changed modules.

Nick 3dadf2d3f5 feat(scaffolding): capability-fit discovery, gap decisions, toolchain resolution, layout contracts (SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-003)
- capability_fit.py: open-world CapabilityRequirement; deterministic
candidate discovery over Spine/Scaffold stores (kind + providing-
relationship eligible; environment-contradiction excluded); fit levels
  EXACT/PARTIAL/INCOMPATIBLE/UNKNOWN from contracts+health, never names;
  resolution surface SATISFIED/REUSE/CONFIGURE/COMPOSE/ADAPT_EXISTING/
  ACQUIRE_EXTERNAL/BUILD_NEW/INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE — BUILD_NEW never
silent (insufficient evidence blocks it), brittle-coupling check
(load-bearing missing contracts) forces BUILD_NEW or ACQUIRE with
recorded rationale; composition covers via contract union, flagged
temporary (permanence user-controlled); LLM semantic-fit seam records
  provider/model/reason/evidence/confidence — prose never authority
- toolchain.py: EXISTING PROJECT TOOLCHAIN WINS; constraint keys fixed
  and language-free, values open-world; language change = CHANGE_MAJOR
requiring user approval, never silent; unknown constraints ->
INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE (no invented certainty); Python only selected
because the project uses it — fixtures prove rust/ts/zig resolve
- layout_contract.py: open-world regions (web/tui/qt coexist); stable
ui:<component> identity surviving implementation changes; LOCKED
requires user provenance (mechanically enforced); locked amendment
requires authorized_by=user (enforced, reason required); deterministic
  adapter-observation gate PASS/FAIL/UNKNOWN — UNKNOWN never PASS;
USER-LOCKED drift preserves the contract (deliberate exception to
reality-wins), marks DRIFTING, creates maintenance item; flexible
  violation fails gate until repaired
- REAL TUI PROOF: Rune's actual version display (issue #105, plan
plans/2026-09-03-tui-footer.md) observed from source via deterministic
adapter — footer-bar first child; gate cycle PASS -> controlled
violation FAIL -> restore PASS; binding encoded scaffold-provenance
(durable records establish placement; USER LOCK upgrade NEEDS
  CONFIRMATION — not fabricated)
- capability/layout integration proven: version-display requirement
discovers the existing capability + layout binding (REUSE), never
  builds another widget
- 3 modules registered in Spine authority + canonical build + manifest
regenerated (Tranche 2 lesson applied: no hand-edited structural facts)

Tests: 53 new (fit 24 + toolchain 9 + layout 16 + real proof 4);
suite 1439 green; henxels rc=0; pyright 0 errors on new modules.

Nick 16b90fd8be fix(scaffolding): canonical spine rebuild after manual registration — projector-owned edges restored
Root cause of CI unit-tests failure on c7a28e1: the closure step added
belongs_to relationships by hand and recorded deploy observations without
running spine build(), so the stored graph lacked the deploy-identity-
projector's deployed_as edges and diverged from any canonical rebuild.
The rebuild-neutrality test correctly flagged the unexplained structural
change (assert pre == post).

Fix: rebuild through spine's authoritative projector chain. The stored
graph now matches a fresh build exactly; test isolation contract restored
(live-store comparisons must follow canonical build, never hand edits).

"""capability_fit.py — Requirement-fit capability discovery + gap decision.
SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-003. Layer over the Tranche 2 substrate (structural_store,
scaffold, spine). NOT a second graph: discovery queries existing structural
authorities (Rune Spine / Project Scaffold stores) and produces candidates;
fit and resolution are derived verdicts with recorded evidence.
Architecture:
CapabilityRequirement (open-world object)
↓
discover_candidates(store_doc) DETERMINISTIC — structural only
↓
evaluate_fit(requirement, candidate) DETERMINISTIC first;
bounded LLM seam recorded, never
authoritative alone
↓
decide(requirement, fits) resolution surface:
SATISFIED / REUSE / CONFIGURE /
COMPOSE / ADAPT_EXISTING /
ACQUIRE_EXTERNAL / BUILD_NEW /
INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE
Core invariants (tranche brief §5, §27):
- BUILD_NEW is NEVER the default and is never silently chosen from
insufficient evidence.
- Structural discovery produces CANDIDATES; names alone are never fit.
- A stale/superseded/degraded candidate is not silently reusable.
- BUILD BUT DON'T BREAK: adaptation selected only when existing consumers
are provably unaffected; brittle coupling forces BUILD_NEW (with
rationale) or COMPOSE.
- When an LLM contributes interpretation, provider/model/reason/evidence/
confidence are RECORDED; its prose alone never establishes authority.
- Memory is never a structural authority here.

"""construction_decision.py — live Need → Decision → Construction Contract.
SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-004: the adoption layer that turns the Tranche 2/3
mechanisms into a durable procedure Rune no longer has to remember.
NEED (references Task/Intent — never duplicates them)
↓ normalize_need() missing info is NOT invented
↓ discover + fit per authority (deterministic; Spine + Project Scaffold)
↓ resolve per authority + merge (capability_fit resolution surface)
↓ resolve_toolchain() (existing project toolchain wins)
↓ layout obligations (LOCKED authority inherited)
↓ approval gate (material changes → user)
↓ DecisionTrace (durable, model-independent)
↓ generate_contract() (populated from the trace)
Boundaries (brief §3, §32, §33):
- NOT a task engine: Need carries a reference to the existing Task/Intent
authority; Scaffolding never becomes the "why" authority.
- NOT a workflow engine: one decision function, one trace object.
- NOT a research pipeline: insufficient evidence routes to a recorded
research path (seam) — the live ADAPT wiring is a recorded route, not
an executed pipeline call (honest seam, §6).
- NOT a structural authority: it reads Spine/Project Scaffold and
WRITES only Construction Contracts + decision traces.
- BUILD_NEW is never a fallback (§8): merge precedence and the
insufficient-evidence invariant of capability_fit enforce it.

"""layout_contract.py — persistent UI/TUI layout authority.
SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-003. Preserves explicit user interface-placement decisions
as durable structural constraints so future builders must adapt around them.
THE PROBLEM (tranche brief §11): a user says "version information belongs
HERE"; a model implements it; later unrelated work moves it because another
model prefers elsewhere. Unacceptable. User-approved layout is STRUCTURE:
code adapts to the layout, never the reverse.
Authority model:
LayoutContract AUTHORITY — the intended invariant
layout observation EVIDENCE — what an adapter saw at some time
region vocabulary in which contracts are expressed
DRIFT SEMANTICS — deliberate exception to general scaffold drift (§22):
General project drift: reality wins, scaffold reconciles.
USER-LOCKED layout drift: USER INTENT wins; the observation that
violates a locked contract is marked DRIFTING, the contract is NOT
rewritten, a maintenance_item is created, and the structural gate
fails until repair or explicit user-approved amendment.
Validation is STRUCTURAL (adapter seam), never screenshot-based (§17-18):
an adapter observes {component: region/order/parent}; the checker compares
observation to contract. No adapter → UNKNOWN; UNKNOWN is never PASS (§23).

"""test_layout_contract_real_proof.py — SCAFFOLD-TRANCHE-003 §24 real TUI proof.
REAL element: Rune TUI's version display (VersionLabel, issue #105, plan
plans/2026-09-03-tui-footer.md). Durable evidence chain: issue → plan →
implementation → tests/test_version_footer.py.
The observed placement (footer-bar, first child) is established from the
ACTUAL TUI source via a deterministic source-structure adapter — no vision,
no invented user intent.
HONEST LIMIT (§16/§20 of the report): project records establish WHERE the
version display lives; they do not record the USER personally locking that
placement. The contract is therefore encoded with provenance="scaffold"
(verified, evidence-backed) — NOT user-locked — and the report marks:
REAL VERSION PLACEMENT NEEDS USER CONFIRMATION for the lock upgrade.
